My name is Brian, and I'm an entrepreneur
Allow me to introduce myself
I’m Brian Miller, a writer, entrepreneur, and educator who has spent the better part of three decades building brands, teaching the next generation of designers and marketers, and learning how to lead with clarity. I’ve founded and sold two companies, written two books with Simon & Schuster, and discovered that success feels very different when it’s grounded in purpose instead of pressure.
I started my first company, MillerSmith, from a blank page and a sketchbook. Years later, I did the same with Seir Hill, the non-alcoholic spirits brand inspired by my own journey to quit drinking. Both grew from small ideas into meaningful businesses, each eventually acquired, each a chapter that shaped the way I think about creativity, leadership, and the kind of work that truly matters.
Sobriety didn’t slow me down. It sharpened everything. When I stopped drinking in May 2022, I found the clarity I didn’t know I was missing. Mornings returned. Focus deepened. My work improved. My relationships grew stronger. Sobriety didn’t take anything from me, it gave me back the ability to build with intention.
Alongside entrepreneurship, teaching has been one of the great privileges of my life. I’m an adjunct professor at Sacred Heart University, where I teach design, marketing, and the business of building things from scratch. I also serve as a mentor at Fairfield University, helping students and early-stage founders find their footing and their voice. After twenty years in higher education, I’ve learned that teaching isn’t just sharing what you know, it’s investing in someone else’s future.
As an author, I’ve written two books on design and creative work, Above the Fold and Principles of Web Design, both published by Simon & Schuster. They’ve been used in classrooms and studios across the country, and they opened doors I didn’t know existed. My next book, None for Me: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Drinking, is the most personal project I’ve ever taken on, an honest look at entrepreneurship, sobriety, and the belief that clarity is a competitive advantage.
Outside of all this, I’m simply a husband, a father of two amazing daughters, and a guy who lives in a 1744 barn in Wilton, Connecticut with six cats and more creative projects than I can keep track of. Most of my best ideas arrive early in the morning, before the house wakes up, when the coffee is hot and the world is quiet.
Thanks for being here.
If you’re building something, rebuilding something, or trying to live with more intention, I hope my work gives you insight, encouragement, and a sense that you’re not doing it alone. Let’s keep going, one clear step at a time.
